Deadly Storm Shakes Delhi-NCR: Flight Chaos and Infrastructure Damage Amid Weather Warning for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

A powerful storm roared through Delhi-NCR on April 12, 2025, bringing severe weather chaos and tragic consequences. A wall at an under-construction site collapsed during the storm, resulting in the death of one individual. The region was engulfed by heavy dust, leading to significant flight delays and cancellations at Delhi Airport. As infrastructure across the city bore the brunt of the turbulent weather, citizens were reminded of nature's unpredictability.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had accurately anticipated the storm, predicting thunderstorms, light rain, and gusty winds ranging from 20-30 kmph, with potential gusts reaching 40 kmph. While the tempest offered a momentary break from the oppressive heatwave that had been gripping the region, it's not a long-term respite. Heatwave conditions are projected to return as soon as April 16, compelling residents to prepare once again for rising temperatures.
But it wasn’t just Delhi-NCR facing Mother Nature’s fury. Many other states, such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, are also on high alert. Thunderstorms combined with lightning and strong winds are forecasted for these areas. Eastern and southern states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and even Himachal Pradesh, are anticipating lightning strikes bringing potential disruptions to daily life.
Particularly alarming is the situation in Bihar, where extreme weather has claimed 61 lives so far, not just from recent storms but also due to lightning and hailstorms. In response, Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for each bereaved family. The atmosphere remains volatile, especially in spots like West Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, and the Northeast. Gusts might peak at 50 kmph in these areas, posing a constant threat to safety and stability.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan is bracing for potential dust storms as residents across this array of states remain vigilant and heed weather advisories. With such unpredictable climatic events on the rise, preparedness has become the key word for communities looking to safeguard themselves against potential dangers.
